Betsy Armstrong

Betsy has lived in Surry Village since 2012. She retired from a long career teaching people with visual impairments in her native Texas and then NYC.

Betsy threw herself into a variety of town and community organizations. She is a founding member of Surry’s Age-Friendly group, Neighbors Helping Neighbors and orchestrates sand bucket distribution. Betsy is a Master Gardener Volunteer and serves on the MGV Advisory Committee, drives for Surry Community Improvement Ass’n, is a board member/secretary for the Loaves and Fishes Pantry, is part of the Families First Community Center, and a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church.

On the Selectboard, Betsy’s achievements have been improving town communication via The Surry Scoop and regularly changing the Town sign. She managed the purchase of the Carrying Place Beach property. Betsy became Board Chair in 2021. This term has been fraught with hurdles. Experienced selectmen were replaced by a totally new Board, losing historical memory. Thankfully our office staff efficiently guides us through procedures.

The COVID shutdown limited personal access to the Town Office and meetings. The pandemic has forever altered how business is done, opening information and participation to more residents with internet ability. The challenge is to include the rest of the community. Betsy is keeping longer office hours to increase access.
